EV & Hybrid Battery Longevity Guide

Transitioning to an electric or hybrid vehicle comes with new questions, and the most common one we hear in Abilene is: "How long will the battery last?" Modern EV and hybrid batteries are engineered to easily last 100,000 to 200,000 miles, but how you treat your vehicle plays a massive role in maximizing that lifespan. Arrow Point Auto Mall is here to help you protect your investment.

The Golden Rules of EV Charging

The 80/20 Rule

For fully electric vehicles (EVs), keeping your battery at 100% all the time actually stresses the lithium-ion cells. For daily commuting around the Big Country, adjust your vehicle's charging settings to stop at 80%. Try not to let it drop below 20% before plugging it back in.

Only charge your vehicle to 100% when you are preparing for a long road trip where you need maximum range.

More Charging Tips

Limit Fast Charging

DC Fast Chargers are amazing for road trips, but relying on them for daily charging creates excess heat that degrades the battery over time. Stick to Level 1 or Level 2 home charging whenever possible.

Plug In During Extreme Cold

When the occasional Texas freeze hits, leaving your EV plugged in allows its thermal management system to draw power from the grid—not your battery—to keep the cells at a safe temperature.

Hybrid Battery Management

If you drive a standard hybrid (not a plug-in), the car manages the battery automatically! Just drive normally; the regenerative braking and gas engine will keep the battery healthy.

Beating the West Texas Heat

Protecting Cells from Summer Sun

High temperatures are the natural enemy of lithium-ion batteries. While modern EVs feature liquid-cooling systems to protect the battery pack, an Abilene summer requires a little extra care.

Park Smart: Whenever possible, park in a garage, a carport, or the shade. Keeping the direct sun off your vehicle prevents the thermal management system from working overtime while the car is parked.

Pre-Condition Your Cabin

Did you know you can cool down your EV while it is still plugged in? Use your vehicle's smartphone app to turn on the AC 10 minutes before you leave.

Because the car is plugged into your home charger, it uses grid electricity to cool the cabin rather than draining your battery pack, preserving your driving range and reducing strain on the system.

Routine Maintenance for Electrified Vehicles

EV Maintenance: Simple & Clean

Fully electric vehicles have significantly fewer moving parts than traditional cars. You will never need an oil change, spark plug replacement, or transmission flush. Your primary maintenance will be tire rotations, replacing cabin air filters, and topping off wiper fluid.

Pro Tip: EVs are heavier and use regenerative braking. While your brake pads will last incredibly long, you should keep an eye on your tire tread wear, as EV tires can wear out slightly faster due to the instant torque.

Hybrid Maintenance: The Arrow Advantage

Because traditional hybrids still rely on an internal combustion engine, they require standard maintenance like regular oil changes and fluid checks.

The great news? Keep up with that routine maintenance at a certified shop, and your hybrid's gasoline engine is protected by our Arrow for Life Lifetime Engine Guarantee. It is the ultimate peace of mind for hybrid drivers.
